Relations between battery suppliers and automakers for knowledge base development during paradigmatic shifts in technology

چکیده
In this paper, integrators’ and suppliers’ relative focus on component versus architectural knowledge during a potential paradigmatic shift in technology is studied, using the electrification of the vehicle’s powertrain as a case. US patents granted to six automakers and two of their battery suppliers during the period 1976 – 2009 form the main empirical basis. The study provides empirical support for an increasingly important role of batteries in the vehicle’s powertrain and illustrates the wide variety in knowledge development approaches of the automakers and battery makers. In relation to previous literature, this paper details the terminology used in relation to the component and architectural dimensions, it investigates the knowledge overlap in relation to the degree of uncertainty and it proposes additional factors potentially related to the knowledge strategies.

متن کاملSuppliers and Product Development in the Early American Automobile Industry
Joint product development, in which suppliers and automakers hare the responsibility for component design, has given Japanese auto companies an important competitive advantage in both quality and new model lead times [Clark, 1989]. In contrast, U.S. automakers until recently left little room for suppliers' participation in the design process; vendors typically manufactured components to assembl...

Drawing on an empirical study on automakers’ management of supplier involvement in product development in Japan, this paper shows that when the design of a component is outsourced to a supplier, how much and what automakers know about the component matters for them to gain a better outcome. While the actual tasks of designing and manufacturing components could be outsourced, automakers should r...
متن کاملCollaboration Support Technologies in Interorganizational Relationships: An Empirical Exploration in Buyer-Supplier Joint Design Activities
First, we explore the conditions under which U.S. and Japanese automakers use computer-aided design (CAD), a collaboration support technology, to coordinate their joint design activities with some suppliers but not others. We hypothesize greater use in relationships that most benefit from the technology’s coordination enhancing capabilities. However, the investments in hardware and software, an...
